Finding America

Whether you love or hate British cuisine, there's no denying that some food items are simply too delicious for words. While the items on this list might not necessarily offer great nutritional value, they are some of the tastiest things either side of the Atlantic. Here is part 1 in a series of lists looking at wonderful British food items all Americans should try.

Sausage rolls
A sausage wrapped in pastry, the sausage roll is one of the finest food items to come out of England. You can eat them hot and you can eat them cold and they come in all different sizes.

Marmite
This one will provoke outrage among 50% of my readers. They say that you either love Marmite or you hate it. I fall into the former camp. Weather you have it on a cheese sandwich or simply partake of a bag of Twiglets, you're in for an interesting time, whatever your preference.

Beans on Toast
There might be no combination more British. Beans on toast is one of those things that Americans should love, but invariably don't get. Still, it makes for a fine, easy meal.

Mint Sauce
Nothing pairs better with a lamb chop than this jar of beauty. Finely chopped spearmint leaves mixed with vinegar, mint sauce is a condiment of the highest order.

Pickled Onions
Speaking of pairings, few things go better with fish and chips than 3 or 4 pickled onions. Dowsed in vinegar and salt, pickled onions are bettered perhaps only by one other fish and chips side: mushy peas.

Sometimes, it's better hearing me in a British accent. Click the red button below.

Laurence Brown is a British man writing his way through the truly bizarre world of America - a place he sometimes accidentally calls home and a place he still hasn't quite figured out after seven years. Thankfully, his journey is made 12% easier by the fact that his accent makes him sound much smarter than he is. For evidence of this, subscribe to his popular Lost in the Pond web series over on YouTube.

  1. You have pretty much hit on all my favorite foods from the UK, you did miss the sticky toffee pudding.

  3. I've not tried any of these 5 yet, but will look out for it when I'm in London soon. I could totally see myself liking the Mint Sauce a lot. Beans on Toast sounds good too.
