With a total area of almost 3.8 million square miles, the United States is approximately 40 times the size of the United Kingdom, which itself is comprised of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Of the fifty states, there are exactly eleven that are large enough to house—bearing in mind that we are taking liberties with shape and tectonics—the entire area of the United Kingdom at least once.
As you navigate the list for your state, please note that we are dealing with the total area and not just that of the land. In other words, water territories, such as lakes and rivers, are included in both the given area of the United Kingdom and each state listed below.
EDIT: This article was edited after it was quite rightly pointed out that South Dakota was missing from the list of "remaining 39" states. This has now been amended.

Oh my, such perspective! No wonder I got a bit antsy at a Brit who asked me why I hadn't travelled round the States as much as they thought I should have in 18 months. It's effing massive innit?!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy state Maryland is kneehigh to a grasshopper. Thou are tagged ! come answer some funny questions on my blog
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised to see Pa. so low. It's a pretty big state.
ReplyDeleteMindy Helms said: Cool! North Carolina came in at a little over a half of a UK. Great post!
ReplyDeleteWhere is South Dakota? :)
ReplyDeleteBelow North Dakota
DeleteThis comment^^^^^!!!! Thank you for this. Bwhahahaha
DeleteLOL! Seriously, thanks for that!
DeleteROFLMAO
DeleteMy apologies for missing off South Dakota. Not sure how I missed it, especially since it is one of the larger states. I have amended the list accordingly. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThere are two New Hampshires
ReplyDeleteFixed. Apparently I'd been at the Newcastle Brown when I compiled this list.

ReplyDeleteHUGE
ReplyDeleteThe road links through new UK seem sparse? You need air plane to goto Scotland!
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting. I would love to see British people discover more places in the states other than California, Florida and New York City. Diverse lands scenery and people.
ReplyDeleteI was in the Scottish Highlands earlier this month and thought the area large.
Well, now we know what they should do. Sell the whole country to the arabs, and move to the U.S.. Kind of like how all the northeasterners move to the south to retire..... Well, we've got plenty of room. Come to the U.S.A., we've got something for everybody here. Hot, cold, dry, wet, tropical, it's all here.
ReplyDeleteHow did you get Michigan at number 11? The U.k. us a bit larger than Michigan. And matter of fact the states of Nebraska,North and South Dakota are larger than Michigan which you did not mention. And even those 3 states would be a bit smaller than the U.k. and would have been better to make a comparison mistake with than Michigan. Michigan would have only been comparable in size if you were just comparing England and Wales, excluding Scotland. So just thought I would state this for correction purpose only.Lol!
ReplyDeleteHi, Ronald. This list is taking into account bodies of water too. Michigan's land combined with portions of the Great Lakes makes it larger than the UK and its bodies of waters. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI gotcha! Your U.K. has punched far above it's weight in the world despite its size. Especially compared with many larger nations land and population wise. But because of certain reasons. I enjoyed your post. Do bring more interesting facts
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! I'm a Cali girl, born & raised, & I've always thought of my brothers over the pond as our mirror-image runty bruv! CHEERS, MATES!
ReplyDeleteI'll take Britain over any of them ❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteNew Jersey in the U.S. is slightly larger than Wales but it has almost 3x the population.
ReplyDeleteMy God!! Just the New York is half the UK? That's amazing.
ReplyDeleteI've been searching to see which was bigger the U.K. or New England, with a little math found out your side of the pond won🤗
ReplyDeleteI just found this site and it looks good. Is there a way to be informed when they upload a new video? Thanks
ReplyDeleteAs a Britain you have no claim or moral right to annex the 6 counties of Ireland from the rest of the island in a misguided visual representation of the Un-United Kingdom. Put it back.
