225 years ago today, Scottish explorer Alexander Mackenzie reached the mouth of a river system in north-western Canada that he believed would lead to the Pacific; however, he was in for a major disappointment..

Setting off by canoe from his Canadian outpost, Mackenzie eventually happened upon not the Pacific, but the Arctic Ocean. Upon this unfortunate discovery, it is rumoured that Mackenzie initially named the river system the "Disappointment River," though this has never been verified by historians.

The Mackenzie River, named after the Scot, is the second longest river system in North America, behind only the Mississippi.
