Continuing our series of alphabetised words and phrases common to the U.S. that are not widely used in the UK, here are 12 such words beginning with the letter 'L'.


1. Ladybug
Red, black-spotted beetle. UK equivalent: ladybird.

2. Laundromat
A public place to wash laundry. UK equivalent: laundrette or launderette.

3. Layer cake
UK equivalent: sandwich cake or sandwich.

4. Learner's permit

A restricted license for a person learning to drive, who has not yet passed the necessary driver's test (rules vary from state to state); also called driver's permit. UK equivalent: provisional driving licence.

5. Left field
A source of unexpected or illogical questions, ideas, etc. ("that proposal came out of left field")

6. License plate
Vehicle registration plate. UK equivalent: number plate.

7. Lumber
Wood used for commercial purposes. UK equivalent: timber.

8. Lunch meat
Thinly sliced meat meant for sandwiches. UK equivalent: luncheon meat.
