London to Indiana: A Most Unlikely Relocation

Since 2008, I have resided—in tandem with my American wife—in the Midwestern state of Indiana. This fact alone might not seem all that unusual. The bizarre part, however, is the fact that I’d given up the bustling city of London (population: 8 million) for Indiana’s largely rural terrain and the city of Anderson (population: 56,000) at the very point when I’d been perfectly content living in a major city.

'I Won't Become Americanized': 5 Lies British Expats Tell Themselves

Mark Twain once wrote—and it's a view I share—that travel is fatal to narrow-mindedness. Upon leaving our own nation for another we should not only prepare to respect that nation's culture but, to a large extent, immerse ourselves in it.

Watch My Cat Fail A U.S. Citizenship Test

My cat is a lot of things—cute, playful, needy. What he isn't is a U.S. history buff. When I quizzed him on universally-known trivia such as, "what is the capital city of the United States," he just looked at me as if I were speaking a foreign language.

British Expat Gives His Verdict on the State Fair

In this special video, I share some of my thoughts on one of America's enduring events: the state fair.  Fairs, of course, are not an unknown entity in the United Kingdom, but since I've not been to one in my homeland since I was about 8, I'll just have to imagine how many key differences exist between UK and U.S. incarnations.

LISTEN: Music Inspired By British Expat's London Memories

Before setting sail (aboard Air Canada) to the United States in 2008, I had spent the better part of a year plying my trade in the heart of London. It was a city I could easily have settled into on a permanent basis had it not been for recession-era work complications. Getting laid off at the height of the economic downturn was the tipping point—not least because it ensured that my wife and I would not be able to pay for her visa application.

United Kingdom vs. Iowa | Just the Stats

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, the United States is an extraordinarily large place. It is so large, in fact, that 11 of its states separately possess a total area larger than that of the entire United Kingdom. This is truly mind-boggling, especially given that the UK is itself comprised of four nations.

British Expat: American Phrases That Drive Me Nuts

I recognize the fact that this video might draw some ire. It might even cause a slight ruckus in the comment section among my American followers. However, before you start burning effigies of me in the street, know that—in general—I am the biggest defender of American English. Its history, continued evolution, and application in daily life is of considerable interest to me.
