Laurence Brown is a British man writing his way through the truly bizarre world of America - a place he sometimes accidentally calls home and a place he still hasn't quite figured out after seven years. Thankfully, his journey is made 12% easier by the fact that his accent makes him sound much smarter than he is. For evidence of this, subscribe to his popular Lost in the Pond web series over on YouTube.

  1. It's rare that people experience the downside of America's gun culture. It is true that the media hype of these awful incidents (like the recent Orlando nightclub shooting) tend to give the impression that the USA is a hailstorm of bullets. In the VAST majority of situations I would argue that you are safe. But 100 percent safety can't be guaranteed anywhere in the world.
21 year old Brit Oliver Wheeldon had the "authentic experience" of US gun violence at his North Arizona University campus (in Flagstaff, Arizona) back in early October 2015. He made a video of his emotions and state of mind.

  2. So true about people's misconception of guns in this country. I've some British friends who are in the process of trying to move here and although they are actually in favor of our right to carry, they have asked about it because of the hype they hear on tv. I have told them I have not only traveled around so much of the US and have lived my whole life up and down the East coast and never ever have I witnessed any violence much less gun violence. I carry because I have the right to do so and I would rather have it and never need it then need it and not have it. That said I feel safe wherever I go and like every city and town and country there are always places you don't go especially at night. But the media plays up gun related incidents so much that it would seem if I watched my own local news that you risk your life coming here or traveling here and it is simply not true. Most gun related incidents in our area and this is coming from someone who has a father in law enforcement (detective) that it's often the drug and gang related to their own people not innocent bystanders.

I love your blog by the way, very funny! :)
