Finding America

Me and Tarah

Americans like to ask me about the place in England in which I grew up: Grimsby. Long before I moved to the United States, Grimsby was where I spent the first 21 years of my life.

It was here, in what I then believed to be the approximate centre of the universe, that I developed many of my perspectives on the world. For example, that there was undoubtedly a barge in every town or that referring to chewing gum as "spoggy" was what every English-speaking person did.

Little did I know during my childhood years that Grimsby was, in fact, just a mere dot on the face of a very vast planet.

Here is a short video showcasing that dot, and the impact it has had on my life.

Sometimes, it's better hearing me in a British accent. Click the red button below.

Laurence Brown is a British man writing his way through the truly bizarre world of America - a place he sometimes accidentally calls home and a place he still hasn't quite figured out after seven years. Thankfully, his journey is made 12% easier by the fact that his accent makes him sound much smarter than he is. For evidence of this, subscribe to his popular Lost in the Pond web series over on YouTube.

  1. I have been following Lost in the Pond for a while now and thoroughly enjoy it. You make Grimsby sound delightful. I will have to add it to my list of places I want to visit if I ever have the opportunity to travel to the U.K.
